Who’s who

The National Human Rights Consultation was run by an independent Committee.

The role of the Committee was to consult broadly with the community, including those who live in rural and regional areas, about the protection and promotion of human rights.  They undertook a range of awareness raising activities so that as many people as possible could participate.

The Committee has now reported to Government on what they heard during the Consultation – to give the Government a better understanding of what the community thinks about human rights.

In their report to Government the Committee was asked to set out the advantages and disadvantages of various ways of protecting and promoting human rights, including the social and economic costs and benefits.

The Committee was also asked to provide an assessment of the level of support in the community for each of the ideas identified during the consultation.  The report will be the basis for the Government to consider the human rights framework in Australia.

The Consultation Committee was supported by a Secretariat in the Attorney-General’s Department.

The Consultation Committee consists of Father Frank Brennan (Chairperson), Philip Flood, Mary Kostakidis, Mick Palmer and Tammy Williams.
