Who’s who
The National Human Rights Consultation is run by an independent Committee.
The role of the Committee is to consult broadly with the community, including those who live in rural and regional areas, about the protection and promotion of human rights. They are undertaking a range of awareness raising activities so that as many people as possible can participate.
The Committee will report to Government on what they hear during the Consultation – to give the Government a better understanding of what the community thinks about human rights.
In their report to Government the Committee will set out the advantages and disadvantages of various ways of protecting and promoting human rights, including the social and economic costs and benefits.
The Committee will also provide an assessment of the level of support in the community for each of the ideas identified during the consultation. The report will be the basis for the Government to consider the human rights framework in Australia.
The Consultation Committee is supported by a Secretariat in the Attorney-General’s Department.
The Consultation Committee consists of Father Frank Brennan (Chairperson), Philip Flood, Mary Kostakidis, Mick Palmer and Tammy Williams.
