Plenty to say in Paraburdoo
Paraburdoo, in Western Australia’s Pilbara, is a small mining town within the Ashburton Shire. The name ‘Paraburdoo’ is derived from an Aboriginal word reflective of the high population of cockatoos, which turned out to be thoroughly apt as we were welcomed by their screeching outside the shire hall.
Yet this minor distraction did not stop the free-flowing and engaging discussion among participants, who may have been small in number but had plenty to say.
Some of the issues discussed related to corporate social responsibility, a vital issue in a town so heavily supported by a mine. Others related to the provision of health and other social services to a population always in flux and many were raised in regards to Indigenous rights and especially native title.
Our thanks go to the community at Paraburdoo for your time and worthwhile contribution to the Consultation process.
