Plenty of ideas in Penrith

The Penrith Community Roundtable has been a huge success. Registrations filled up much faster than expected and people were eager to contribute their ideas. The conversation was lively from start to finish of the session.

With Mick Palmer and Tammy Williams still unwell, Frank Brennan and Mary Kostakidis represented the Committee. Mary opened the Roundtable by acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and the discussion took off. She led the attendees through the key questions of the Consultation:

  • Which human rights and responsibilities are important to you?
  • Are these rights and responsibilities adequately protected now?
  • How could rights and responsibilities be further protected in the future?

There was considerable interest in talking about a legislative charter of human rights. Many people supported federal legislation arguing that it was essential to redress the lack of protection for vulnerable minorities and better ensure that Australia maintained its strong human rights record. On the other hand, others argued strongly that the current system served us well – and that specific human rights legislation wasn’t necessary.

The issue of the accessibility and transparency of the judiciary was also hotly debated. There was concern expressed that the judiciary was appointed, not elected and that judges have too much discretion. However, this opinion was contested, with some arguing that a strong judiciary was essential for the protection of human rights.

Other key issues that were discussed include:

  • The need to provide more appropriate accommodation and better protect the rights of young people in nursing homes
  • Concern about the use of administrative detention in immigration settings
  • Better human rights education for all school children
  • How to make people more aware of their existing rights
  • The possibility of legislation to protect the human rights of Indigenous Australians

So as you can see, Penrith sparked interesting thoughts. Again, what a great opportunity for us to spend time with the people of Penrith. Looking forward to upcoming Dubbo, Bourke and Sydney!
