Consultation news
Great turnout in Geelong
The Geelong consultation saw a strong turnout, with many people attending who were eager to engage in a passionate discussion about rights and responsibilities.
Some participants spoke of their negative interactions with mental health authorities, emphasising the right to liberty and security of the person. Others spoke about the need for improved service provision for the aged and people with disability, highlighting the rights of vulnerable groups.
In discussing various mechanisms for the protection of human rights, a number of participants raised the need to ensure equal access to justice, as well as adequate provision of legal aid.
Following on from our Melbourne sessions, many of the Geelong participants voiced complaints about the Victorian charter of rights, saying it did nothing to protect people’s human rights.
Thank you Geelong for some interesting and insightful debate.
