Brilliant discussions in Burnie

Driving into Burnie for our second Community Roundtable in Tasmania, we were pleased to be able to take in some of the spectacular landscape the State has to offer. But once we arrived at our venue, it was straight down to business as we discussed human rights and responsibilities and what they mean to the Burnie community.

While it was a smaller group than we had seen in some of our previous sessions, this gave us the opportunity to really nut out some of the issues in depth.

One brave woman told us of her experience working in a nursing home that was committing appalling human rights abuses. In turn, this generated some stimulating discussion around the responsibilities for protecting human rights. Another interesting point for discussion was raised when a woman shared the frightening consequences that can result from delays in the justice system.

From there, we considered the support required for the disabled, the injustices done to asylum seekers and the problems associated with a lack of adequate housing.

A general conclusion was also drawn from the group, namely that there needs to be better funding for services and a change in culture so that people are more engaged, both in their work and in their communities.

Thank you Burnie – a beautiful town where we were able to hold some valuable and incredibly stimulating discussions.
