National Human Rights Consultation Submission AGWW-7RC6Y2 Organisation: sutherland shire family services Submission Text: Until 2005 I had been totally unaware that Australia has never had a bill of rights, I have never been politically motivated until then. It actually scared me when I found out that we have no human rights here in Australia, and the government could do whatever they choose against our rights as humans, and we can do nothing, it made me nervous because Howard was in power at the time, and he had already forced draconian laws on us as it was, the law enforcement agencies can lock up and detain any one of us for whatever reason they wish, and we and our families can do nothing. It just isn't ok for this to be ignored any longer. I am an Indigenous Australian and have grown up without as many rights as my fellow Australians anyway, but the thought of even other Aussies not having human rights is very worrying. All we need now is for a 'madman' to get into power, and that's the end of all our freedom as we know it. The fact that our govt does not come to the aid of Aussies in trouble overseas is really embarrassing, we are reknown all over the world for sticking up for our mates, yet our own govt refuses to defend any Aussie experiencing problems when overseas. Shame Aussie govt, Shame... i will be travelling to the UK this year and am very worried about travelling with my Aussie passport as it's already known around the world that our govt does absolutely nothing to help you if you are in trouble overseas. When are we going to get in line with the rest of the world and be given our basic human rights in the form of an Australian bill of rights? and a guarantee that the bill of rights includes my fellow Indigenous Australians.
