National Human Rights Consultation Submission AGWW-7RDTDH Name: Geoff Lapthorne Submission Text: NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS CONSULTATION SUBMISSION I see no need for a Charter of Rights in Australia. We are already adequately protected by existing legislation. 1. There is no call for such a charter. Minority groups are not oppressed and there is harmony between people of different religions. 2. A Charter of rights will move decision making from parliament to the judiciary. I have no confidence in judges, who are not accountable to the public. Judges do not have a good track record with their decisions frequently overturned on appeal because they were wrong in law or out of touch with community sentiment. Better to stick with politicians who are accountable. 3. A Charter of Rights can be abused to stifle legitimate debate. “Truth will not be a defence if someone is offended.” 4. A Charter of Rights will promote conflict: “My rights” v “Your rights.” GEOFF LAPTHORNE Page 1 of 1
